This book is true rock ‘n’ roll in its purest form — music, sex, drugs, and the thrill of it all.
I am amazed I read and finished this book in two days, because it was so riveting and exciting and interesting. One of those rare reads where I couldn’t put it down. All of the emotions and events were so real and palpable. I was transported through the real-life minds and thoughts of each and every person. A few pages in, I was learning more and more about Daisy Jones and the members of The Six, and thought to myself, “This sounds an awful lot like Fleetwood Mac,” only to find out they served as the major inspiration for this story of a fictional band in the 70s. And, as a huge musicophile, I ate this whole thing up.
It is told through an oral history interview-style format, which I loved and read so well. I could see it all playing out as a movie in my head, which was just so damn fun.
I love music as a musician myself, dreaming of playing in bands and having intensely beautiful artistic and creative collaborations, playing with friends, making beautiful art together and writing songs that express your soul. Reading about Daisy Jones walking through this world as a classic pretty LA girl with an alluring aura, who was undeniably a star and so naive enough to know she doesn’t even want or crave it, it just comes to her… She is naturally a rock star, and I could feel how cool she was and a true “it girl.”
Hearing the band work in the studio days-on-end working and creating their iconic record, with all their personal lives enmeshed, and their creative chemistry and tension so felt and palpable… Gosh, they don’t write that kind of stuff because it’s so damn real. And that reality is so beautifully told in Daisy Jones & the Six.
A lot of it is quite sad and depressing, yet so achingly beautiful and poetic at the same time. It’s a lesson in how people are mirrors to yourself, and sometimes the ones you’re most drawn to may not seem all that similar to yourself, but deep down have a lot of the faults and mess you have hidden inside.
Definitely recommend. Easily one of my favorite reads. I could live and dream in this book more and could even do a second read. Can’t wait to catch the show after reading it!
