People are still confused by John Mayer‘s music video for “Still Feel Like Your Man” off his upcoming LP The Search For Everything due April 17. And for good reason.
The vividly colored video features Mayer entering a geisha house full of butterflies, dancing pandas, and Kill Bill-inspired moments as he lusts for a previous lover donning a butterfly-covered veil. He dances (maybe cringingly) and shrugs off his feelings of unrequited love.
Mayer seems to make light of his situation, feeling totally okay that he “still feel[s] like your man.” He even talks about “the prettiest girl in the room” wanting to get to know him, but that he “just don’t think I can / ‘Cause I still feel like your man.”
The music itself is incredibly tasty. It’s groovy, soulful and makes you feel good. His voice soars over a spacey, atmospheric piano riff which lends its way to groovy guitar licks and fills that are light and delicate. Simply put: Mayer’s musicianship has never been questioned.
But for a song about longing and unrequited love, the spirit of the song and complete nonsense that bursts from the video captures that idea so well — that he just doesn’t care.
In one of Mayer’s early songs “No Such Thing,” he preaches about everyone pretending they’ve got life all figured out when in reality, no one knows a thing. He sings, “They love to tell you stay inside the lines / But something’s better on the other side.” In other words, we constantly worry about money, prestige and appearances when we know that none of it matters at the end of the day — life’s meant for more.
His “Still Feel Like Your Man” video runs across the similar line of making light of things we cannot control. “I know that you probably found yourself some more somewhere,” he sings, “But I do not really care / ‘Cause as long as it is there / I still feel like your man.”
Even if this ex-lover Mayer sings about has already moved on, it doesn’t seem to change his feelings for her. He’s come to accept his emotional turmoil simply because it is what it is.
He’ll proudly “still feel like your man” and groove with dancing pandas in his questionably culturally-appropriate ‘disco dojo,’ even if it makes no sense at all. Why?
Because what else can one do?
What are your thoughts?

Love like you’ll never be hurt,
Sing like there’s nobody listening,
And live like it’s heaven on earth.”
