This performance made me a lot more emotional than I was expecting.
“I wanna lay you down in a bed of roses,” Cassadee Pope cries, illuminated by the lighters–or cell phones–fans are holding up to make Pope feel like she is in “outer space.”
Releasing this special live and intimate performance of Bon Jovi’s “Bed of Roses,” which she claims as one of her “favorite songs of all time,” as a treat to her fans on New Year’s Eve, Pope’s knack for wringing out the emotions behind lyrics and displaying her true rock-roots proves what a natural she is. She would make Jovi himself proud for her take on this.
Nonchalantly providing small-talk and controlling the crowd comfortably, the Florida native gets down to business and, backed by a simple acoustic guitar and lightly-strung mandolin, lends her voice to tell a heart-tugging story of “vodka still lodged in my head” and “movies they won’t make of me when I’m dead.”
2014 has been a whirlwind for Pope. After winning Season 3 of The Voice in 2012 and fronting the pop-rock band Hey Monday from 2008-11, she has gone on to make waves in the country world as one of the few notable female country musicians today; she continues to win fans’ hearts from the pop world as well with her consistent touring the nation.
She tweets fans: “Thank you all for an incredible year! Had a lot of fun performing this at my shows. So I’m sharing it with you!”
I have to say, this performance reminds me once again why I’ve always loved Cass. When the song breaks midway and her vocal-pulling is stopped by the cheers of the fans, the elongated 30-second break creates more and more anxious tension as Cassadee laughs from her fans’ constant cheering.
As she goes on, “I wanna be just as close as the Holy Ghost is,” she sweetly lends us back into that moment with her. And for some reason, we can’t get that strange emotional pull out of our heads of how beautiful a moment it is that we just witnessed.
Damn. You go, Cass. Your natural charisma, musicianship and humility definitely proves all the success you deserve to be experiencing.
