I admit that if it weren’t for this video, I would have never heard of Lesley Gore. But, Lesley Gore seems to be a pop princess, singer-songwriter and talented woman/activist of the ’60s; and, this just proves to you how issues of the past are still relevant today.
In a message from Lesley herself in the video, she stated:
“I recorded ‘You Don’t Own Me’ in 1964. It’s hard for me to believe but we’re still fighting for the same things we were then. Yes, ladies. We’ve got to come together. Get out there and vote. And protect our bodies. They’re ours.”
In this female-empowering celebrity mash-up of just plain cool females singing-along to the classic Gore song, it’s amazing to see the waves women have made as a collective within the past years.
Though, we still do have a ways to go.
It’s lovely how classic songs like these are so timeless, yet still capture relevant issues. I’ll be sure to keep this a staple in my playlist.
Rest in Peace, Lesley Gore. Your work and legend stays. Let us all continue to inspire and make waves within the work we do!
