The Night Game releases retro visual for “The Outfield” (Lyric Video)

There are only a few times where a new band, musician or song really make an impression on me. The Night Game’s “The Outfield” is one of those few.

Fronted by Boys Like Girls’ frontman Martin Johnson, The Night Game is a newly formed new wave band that first started off as a solo project by Johnson. The first single “The Outfield” was just released in April of this year with a new lyric video debuting this week — and it’s a standout.

The single is anthemic without trying too hard to be. The catchy hooks, power chords and brilliant vocals by Johnson are so tasty. As a longtime singer, songwriter and record producer, Johnson is known for writing some of pop music’s catchiest hits (credits include songs by Taylor Swift, Avril Lavigne, Jason Derulo and Gavin Degraw).

You tell me you won’t get obsessed with this ’70s-infused retro masterpiece.

I wanna lover, I wanna lover, I can’t control
You left me waiting, you left me waiting out in the cold
I know you try so hard to be so hard to get
But I can hear the way you talk under your breath

I wanna lover, I wanna lover, I can’t evolve
I see your picture, I see your picture with other boys
The only one, the only that gives me hell
Sometimes it feels like I’m just talking to myself

Far away
You got me standing in the outfield
By the way
Sometimes it’s almost like you’re not real
I always swore that I would get to you some day
I’m getting closer, but I’m still so far away
You got me standing in the outfield

The lyrics, concept and infectious melodies are just to die for. Having toured with John Mayer on his The Search For Everything Tour, the world is just starting to get a taste of The Night Game.

Let me know your thoughts. Anyone else looking forward to more releases from The Night Game?
