Japanese Breakfast puts indie touch on “California Dreamin'”

Japanese Breakfast put her sonically meditative touch on the 1965 folk-rock classic “California Dreamin'” by The Mamas and the Papas — and we are loving it.

Last summer, Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner released her second record Soft Sounds From Another Planet, a record full of hazy, shoegaze electronics and synths that made it one of Stereogum’s best albums of 2017.

Listen to her take on “California Dreamin'” in her SiriusXMU session below:

As an artist, Zauner is continuously growing and experimenting with her sound: her debut 2016 album Psychopomp was inspired by the death of her mother, while her follow-up was created with more intent to grieve and explore her sound.

You can purchase Soft Sounds From Another Planet on Japanese Breakfast’s website here. Check out my latest interview for Kore during her fall tour here and keep up with everything Japanese Breakfast on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

  1. Interesting. I love California Dreaming and thought this cover was pretty cool. I’ve never heard of Japanese Breakfast before. I’ll check them out. Thanks for posting!
